Rug Alfombra Genero
This rug begins with sheep grazing the hills above Teotitlán del Valle. Eduardo's family shears, washes, and hand-spins the wool in their workshop - the same space where his grandfather learned to weave, and where his children are learning now.
The geometric patterns of their rugs vary from maps of the streets of Oaxaca de Juárez in abstract form to motifs passed down through Zapotec weaving tradition. Each color comes from the land: indigo from añil plants, coral from cochineal insects, creams and grays from the wool itself.
Eduardo works the pedal loom the way his family has for generations, building the rug row by row over three weeks. The result is dense, durable, and entirely unique. No two are exactly alike.
